Is Carl T. Smith's first novel, Nothin' Left to Lose still available?

Does Carl answer his email?

Yes. He is very compulsive about that and answers as many as his schedule allows. He very much enjoys hearing from his readers and refuses to send out form responses.

Is Sam Larkin going to appear in any future novels?

Actually Sam Larkin and Karen Chaney are characters in a follow-up novel Carl is working on at this time.

Other than those mentioned, are there any other books in the works?

An earlier novel, A Slow and Careful Dance, about the reluctance of middle-age people, who have been through bad relationships, to ever commit to another relationship, is in the rewrite process and may be made available for publication in the future.

Will any of Carl's books be made into films?

Nothin' Left to Lose was optioned for film twice; however, unfortunately, this was at the time of the threatened actors' and writers' strike, which never happened. It was not renewed a third time. It is presently being considered by screenwriter, Bill Taub, as a made-for-TV movie. Lowcountry Boil is being read by several producers.

Tom Robbins and Bernard Martin are frequently credited in Carl's books. Who are they and why?

Tom Robbins is the author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and Woodpecker With Still Life among numerous other bestsellers. Bernard Martin is an internationally-known artist who designed the cover for Robbins' Skinny Legs and All and Carl's first book, Nothin' Left to Lose. They were all college friends at Richmond Professional Institute of The College of William and Mary, now Virginia Commonwealth University. They have remained friends for 46 years.

The cover notes on Smith's book say he was an actor, singer and songwriter. Could I have seen him in the movies? Did he ever have a hit record?

Carl was in four feature films, numerous industrial films and commercials and appeared in or directed more than 80 stage productions. Although he recorded several records in the sixties, he never had a hit, for which he says he is grateful. Saying it probably saved his life.
